Ten66 Television and Playing The Race Card team up to explore the evolution of Black British lives on screen with a double screening event.

First up is Desmond’s (1989–1994), Channel 4’s groundbreaking sitcom set in a Peckham barbershop. Created by Trix Worrell, the show became one of the channel’s longest-running comedies, celebrated for its sharp humour and rare portrayal of Black British family life.

Next is Rye Lane (2023), a vibrant romcom directed by Raine Allen-Miller. Set over one day in present-day Peckham, the film offers a fresh, playful take on modern love and identity in South London.

Following the screenings, Lorna Hamilton-Brown MBE sat down with Trix Worrell to discuss the making of Desmond’s and how representations of Black lives on screen have evolved.
